In Indie Game HQ’s latest preview, Nathan takes a look at Pulsus by Monio Games. Pulsus was created recently for the Global Game Jam 2013 in less than 48 hours, and is free to download from GameJolt. (Supports PC, Mac, and Linux)
Pulsus is a timed arcade style collecting game. You must collect the smaller “orbs” to raise your score, and the larger ones to add five seconds to the counter. The clock starts at 60 seconds, so you’ll need to use that time wisely to get as high a score as possible. You also have the ability to switch between 3 modes to destroy enemies in your path.
The 3 modes in Pulsus, as you may have guessed, change the main colors to either red, blue, or green. Each mode allows you to defeat different enemies. Blue will allow you to destroy floating spiky planetary objects, Red is for ground enemies that will circle a planet, and Green will allow the player to defeat asteroid-esque groups of rocks.
The art style is very simplistic, but that doesn’t take away from the game at all. Pulsus is very pretty to look at and the pulsing glows around the planet only add to the aesthetic. I really like the artistic direction that the developers went for.
To add to the overall beautiful styling of Pulsus, the sounds and ambient music really make the game flow. The music is mysterious, the pick-up sounds fit very well, and the other various sound effects bring the whole experience to full circle.
Overall, Pulsus is a fun and somewhat challenging game. Whether you have time to kill, or are looking for an awesome free indie game to play, you won’t have to look very far.
